It seems hard to believe, but we have been operating from our High Street Mall premises for 2 years now! And on the 19th July it will have been 3 years since the doors of the first Portadown Cares charity shop opened in the Mall, and it has been an incredible 3 years. During this time, we have seen our charity grow from a small group of 7 people with big dreams to a team of almost 30 including our committee members and volunteers as well as becoming an employer with 2 part-time staff running the shop. We have come a long way since Portadown Cares started around a kitchen table in 2010, and came into being as a legal entity in October 2012

We have been able to offer practical work experience to a number of people during this time – the long term unemployed, the over 50’s, teenagers looking for their first job, and people with a variety of learning difficulties. All of them have enriched our shop and gained something of value for themselves too. We have also run a large number of community events – cookery demonstrations, craft nights, pottery classes, first aid training, healthy living guidance – all free of charge to help promote education and social inclusion. We are also building up a bank of equipment which other local groups and charities can borrow – bouncy castles, character costumes, PA system, laptops, projector, catering equipment, two way radios – again, all free of charge. This is how we put something back into our local community by enabling them to run their own events without incurring hire costs for equipment.

None of this would be possible without the support of the wonderful people of Portadown who have purchased furniture, clothing and accessories from us, and to the equally magnificent people who have donated things for us to sell. We are here to put something back into our local community, and because of these two groups of people we are able to do just that. We firmly believe that charity begins at home, and home for us is Portadown. Thanks to everyone for all their help, assistance and encouragement, to our first landlords Irwins Bakery, our current landlords Brittas Properties, and to the management of the High Street Mall. Here’s to the next 2 years, and hopefully some big news coming soon……. watch this space!!!!
